When Is It Time for a Wash?

There is no fixed washing schedule that suits every rug. How often cleaning is required depends on its usage, condition and manufacturers guidance.

Check rugs for accumulated dirt, mud, sweat, urine and unpleasant odours. The end of each season is a useful time to arrange cleaning and repairs before storing them away.

Wash when needed - unnecessary washing can increase wear and tear on water-repellent finishes.

Does My Turnout Rug Need Reproofing?

Not every turnout rug requires reproofing after every wash. Dirt can mask the fabric’s existing water repellency, so suitable cleaning may be enough to improve its performance. If the outer fabric continues to absorb water after cleaning, reproofing may be appropriate, depending on the rug, it’s condition and manufacturers guidance.

Water repellency and waterproofness are different. Reproofing helps to renew the outer fabric’s water-repellent finish, but it cannot repair damaged, failed coatings, tears or leaking seams. Water beading on the surface alone does not guarantee that a rug is waterproof.

Small Checks Make a Difference

Check your rugs regularly, paying particular attention to:

  • Chest fastenings, buckles and clips.

  • Surcingles, leg straps and tail straps.

  • Stitching, linings and seams.

  • Tears and worn areas.

Arranging repairs promptly may help to prevent damage becoming more extensive. Repairs to older or weakened fabric may not restore its original strength or water proof performance.

Care In Between Professional Washes

Gently remove loose mud and hair where practical, avoiding harsh scrubbing that could damage the material.

Avoid pressure washing turnout rugs, as this can damage their waterproof layer. Follow the manufacturers care label whenever drying them as many rugs require natural air drying away from direct heat.

Store Clean, Store Dry

Before packing rugs away, always make sure that they are clean and completely dry.

Choose a cool, dry, well ventilated storage area, away from excessive heat and sunlight. A breathable storage bag can help to keep everything organised.

Top Tip: Label each bag with your horse’s name as well as the rug type (including weight), so you can find what you need with ease when the weather changes.
